What is the reason behind scoring well in exams?

Indeed, it is one of the toughest questions to answer for anyone. However, if a student follows the right strategy and plans accordingly, he can achieve his desired score. Keeping oneself busy in meeting the need of finishing the syllabus, most of the students avoid smart-study, for they score less. It is not wrong to follow rote study methods, but it can only get you average marks. To score higher, one should think out-of-the-box.

While in the process of bracing yourself for the exam, here's a look at the important elements that will help you score well:

1. Strategic planning

Firstly, jot down your daily activities on a piece of paper, describing the time consumed in doing the same. Now, cut down the time given those activities which have nothing to do with your exam. Utilise that time to study. Gradually, start reducing time in other activities and spend as much time as you can to study. Once you are done with the syllabus, think beyond the syllabus. Read interviews of toppers, join online group discussions and solve sample papers online. One can self-review their performance by thinking out of the syllabus.

If we retrospect last years' question papers, then students can understand textbooks are not enough for preparation.

Also, it is undeniable to overlook the relevance of 'trial and error' strategy in your planner. Keep revising it as per your goal and convenience. Neither rush with the syllabus, nor get lethargic over a small section of the syllabus.

Secondly, divide your syllabus as per the marking scheme. Topics which hold a huge chunk of marks should be more emphasised on rather than those with one or two marks. Students can find the segregation in sample paper books or on the official website of CBSE.

2. Pattern of study

Like CBSE does not give equal weightage to all the topics, students should also not give equal time and energy to all the topics. Leaf through every topic in a manner that no stone is left unturned, yet give extra attention to a few topics. It should be explicit for students to understand where does his loopholes exit.

  • Fill the void: A student need to know his weak areas-- the subject he finds difficult to understand or cope with. A lot of students have problem in mathematics, which is why they should spend more time on the subject
  • Balance tough and easy subjects: Plan the subjects accordingly, if you find  maths and science difficult, make an alternative plan for both. Devote two hours on maths along with other easy subjects like language, visa a versa for science. There has to be a balance between the tough and easy subjects

3. Review process

Time-to-time self review is important, keep yourself up to date and see whether your plan is successful or not. If you are unable to find an answer, ask your school teachers, friends, elders, coaching teacher etc to examine your performance in the topics which are being covered. Do not calm down at all or appreciate yourself, try to bring out the best in you.

4. Give your best shot

Studying well is a job half-done, while performance is the main key of scoring well. Many students do not pay heed to their performance, rather, they focus on completing the syllabus. During examination, it is highly gruelling to perform to your best capability in the given time constraint. For this, practice and revision are not enough, students need to be mentally prepared with their strategy, especially for dry subjects.

  • Attempt the question paper in the best manner, watch tutorials on YouTube and other educational websites.
  • Experiment with your paper-solving technique while solving a number of sample papers

5. Relax!

Do not think that you cannot make it among the toppers. Do not pressure yourself. As the pressure surmounts, you tend to lose focus and eventually, it will affect your performance. Be happy, appreciate yourself, take breaks but do not get over confident. Have a balanced diet, have brain-foods, like almonds, milk, energy boost up drinks, juices and everything that can enhance your overall performance.
